After spending the beginning of 2005 following the west-coast stint of the AMA supercross circuit, Bobby Garrison returned for round three of the MX West Spring Series to show the Pro class what he has learned, topping the 125cc and 250cc classes with a perfect 1-1-1-1 tally.
Garrison faced down a dozen riders in the 250cc class, but had no trouble getting his Big Valley Honda-backed CRF450R into the lead early and putting immediate distance on the field. Nick Baugh rode to a solid second overall, and Nick Jarrett made his local debut in the Pro class with a third-place ride.
In the 125cc class, Garrison’s only challenge came from J.L. Bitz in the second moto. Bitz holeshot the race and held the lead during the first lap, but soon succumbed to Garrison’s relentless pace. Bitz held on for second on the day, and Rory Krein brought home third overall.
“I felt good,” Garrison said. “The track was smooth, and the rhythm section was fun. It all came out pretty good.”
When asked if the track seemed easy compared to the supercross courses he’s been on recently, Garrison admitted that it did.
“The jumps and everything are really different at a supercross, compared to when I come back here,” Garrison said.
Garrison added that he plans to ride the remaining west-coast supercrosses this year, and then make a run at the outdoor nationals in the 250cc class.
Although the Pro class wins were never in doubt, the Intermediate-class outcomes could not have been more uncertain. Local standouts Aron Harvey and Wes Peebles took on out-of-staters Jordan Mockridge and Kyle Kent at the front of the pack, leading to undoubtedly the best battles of the day. In the end, Mockridge scored the 125cc victory over Kent and Harvey, while Peebles claimed the 250cc win over Mockridge and Ryan Eager.
In 25+ action, Eric Gillen scored the Intermediate-class win over friendly rival Josh Jacobs. Gillen also went on to card an impressive fifth-overall finish in the 250cc Intermediate class. The top spot in the 30+ ranks went to Kevin Truax, as he scored the Pro-class victory aboard his CRF450R. Darron Sturgeon claimed the second spot.
