Carson City, Nevada; June 10, 2005

Continuing his rise through northern Nevada’s mini ranks, Dakota May (728) leveled the Supermini field at round three of the MX West Summer Nights Series with a decisive 1-1 victory.

Although the Supermini class was split into two divisions for the evening, most eyes were on division two, in which May and the rest of his 85cc Intermediate competitors lined up. May had little trouble grabbing both holeshots on his potent Yamaha, leaving him free to charge the tight Carson layout ahead of fellow Intermediate speedsters Wayne Appleton and Zak Riley. May stretched his lead a little on each lap of both motos to claim comfortable margins by the end of each outing. Appleton put in a strong ride to grab second on the evening while Riley rode to a steady third overall.

May might have also claimed the 85cc Intermediate victory had he not struggled with lappers late in the second moto, allowing Appleton to slip by to take the win with a 2-1 score over May’s 1-2. Dakota Neuffer scored third on the night.

“I had a pretty big lead,” May explained of the second Intermediate moto. “But then I got into some lappers, and they were a little squirrelly, and Wayne caught up to me and made a clean pass. But the Supermini moto went really good. I was able to get away and get a big lead, and I felt really smooth.”

In Pro action, Nick Baugh claimed a 2-1 score to top the 250cc class over Tommy Jean’s 1-2 posting. Baugh fought off a persistent charge from Jean throughout the second moto, crossing the line just ahead of Jean for the overall victory. After the race, Baugh said it was difficult to decide whether to run the safer, more defensive inside lines or the slightly faster but more vulnerable middle and outside grooves.

“Tommy was riding a great race out there,” Baugh said. “There were pretty much two lines out there: the fast line and the smart line. It was hard to decide which one to go with. I had to go for the smart line while leading, and he was catching me on the fast lines. But other than that, it was good.”

Jean returned to handily win the 125cc Pro class over Carl Baker and Clint Martin, claiming a 1-1 tally of his own.

The Pee-wee ranks saw Austin Rodgers claim the premiere 50cc 7+ Factory class win over Braxton Giovanetti. William Ionno scored the win in the 50cc 4-6 Factory class, and Drake Evans and Gaige Demars took the 50 7+ and 4-6 Privateer class wins, respectively.
