Fernley, Nevada; February 27, 2005

Wes Peebles (445) has been racing outside of northern Nevada a lot lately, but he showed everyone back home what he’s been learning as he rode to convincing wins in the 250cc Intermediate and Schoolboy classes at round two of the MX West Spring Series.

Peebles looked very strong aboard his RM250 as established comfortable leads in all four of his motos. In the Schoolboy class, Peebles received his only challenge from Andrew Valdez, who grabbed the early lead in the second moto aboard his YZ250F. Valdez fought Peebles valiantly throughout the first lap, but soon slipped to second as Peebles set sail out front. Valdez’s performance earned him second overall.

Peebles’ 250cc victory was no less impressive, as he posted lap times that would have made him very competitive in the Pro class. Peebles will likely choose to remain an Intermediate for this year’s amateur calendar, but watch for him to make a splash in the professional class before too long.

Ryan Eager was Peebles’ closest pursuer in the 250cc class, and he added to that second overall 250cc finish with a hard-fought 125cc Intermediate victory. Eager fought past a bad start to come in a distant second to moto winner Valdez in the first race, but then got the start he was looking for when he holeshot the second moto. Valdez was lurking near the front early in the race when his Yamaha rolled to a stop and ended his charge. By this time, however, Eager was already making a gap on the field that he would extend until the end to take the overall win. Johnny Vallerio scored second overall.

But the best racing and the highest drama of the day occurred in the Supermini ranks as Aaron Siminoe and Taylor Bittner fought throughout every lap of each moto. Siminoe held a narrow lead over Bittner during the entire first moto to take the victory. But it was Bittner who grabbed the lead in the second moto, and he looked just as determined as Siminoe to hold the point. The two remained glued to each other throughout the race, with Bittner holding the advantage to the second-to-last lap when Siminoe took over the lead. But as the two raced toward the finish on the last lap, Siminoe’s KTM ground to a halt, dragging its rear wheel to the side of the track as Bittner sped past to take the win. Siminoe could do nothing but take the long walk back to the pits with his seized supermini, though he might have been somewhat consoled by his earlier victories in the 65cc Intermediate and Super 65cc classes.
