Mustang, Nevada; December 12, 2004

While some of the older crowd stayed away under the threat of December cold, northern Nevada’s mini elite stole the show at round one of the MX West Winter Series. The 65cc and 85cc classes exploded with battles among four riders in particular: brothers Aaron and Ty Siminoe, Brian Sjogren, and Jesse Masterpool.

Aaron Siminoe (622), the older Siminoe brother and lone 80 Intermediate on the day, might have been the top rider in terms of plain speed, but occasional falls kept him from the top spot in the 65cc Intermediate and Super 65cc races. He did, however, come from behind to take the combined win in the 85cc race over the tenacious Junior-class winner Sjogren. He also topped the Supermini class ahead of Brandon Gilmartin.

Aaron’s younger brother, Ty, capitalized on his brother’s mistakes to take both the 65cc Intermediate and Super 65cc victories. But though Siminoe stood atop both classes at the end of the day, neither was a walkover. Siminoe had to fight nonstop to claim his advantage over Sjogren, Masterpool, and his brother.

Sjogren went home without a 65cc-class win, but had to have been consoled by his second moto performance in the 85cc race. Sjogren’s resistance against the advances of Aaron Siminoe and Junior rider Gilmartin was impressive, though he did eventually yield to Siminoe. Nonetheless, he claimed his class win over Gilmartin’s strong showing and undoubtedly turned many heads in the process.

Finally, Jesse Masterpool, whose third-and-fourth-place finishes in the 65cc Intermediate and Super 65cc class belie his actual performance, raced with as much tenacity as any rider on the day. Masterpool rode fast and led often in the 65cc races, though he did slip behind his more experienced competitors in the end.

In Vet action, the race of the day involved 30+ Juniors Michael Halvorsen and Victor Demitrios. The two diced throughout both motos, swapping the lead countless times. Demitrios took the first moto victory in a photo-finish ending, which set the stage for a second moto duel that ended with both riders tangling in the second-to-last turn. Halvorsen remounted ahead of Demitrios to take the moto win and overall.
