Stead, Nevada; May 1, 2005

Mounted aboard a new RM65 and wearing Fox clothing, Jesse Masterpool (926) resembled a miniaturized Ricky Carmichael at round nine of the MX West Spring Series--right down to blazing aggression and heart he showed on his way to the 65cc Intermediate and Super 65cc victories.

Masterpool faced fierce challenges from fellow 65cc flyer Brian Sjogren throughout the day. The final 65cc Intermediate moto hosted perhaps the closest race between the two, as first-moto winner Masterpool narrowly led Sjogren throughout the entire race. Sjogren pulled to Masterpool’s rear fender on the final lap in a last-ditch effort for the overall, but came up just short of the rock-steady Masterpool.

But Masterpool’s Supermini performance was even more impressive than his 65cc-class wins. Riding the lone 65cc machine in a class filled with 85cc Intermediates, Masterpool rode in the top three in both motos until a pair of falls slowed him. Nonetheless, he caused many spectators a double-take upon seeing his diminutive Suzuki near the front of a field of very fast 85cc riders.

“I wanted to try my best today,” Masterpool said. “I made a few mistakes, but I learned from them. I moved on, and kept trying my best.”

Sjogren returned from his battles with Masterpool to post a victory in the 85cc Junior class. David Rumbaugh followed in second and Dylan Bauer scored third.

Aron Harvey delivered three class victories in the Schoolboy, 125cc and 250cc Intermediate contests, riding to six decisive moto wins on the day. Harvey even pushed well into the pros in the 125cc and 250cc motos despite starting on the gate behind them.

“It went really good,” Harvey said. “I didn’t get tired. I did what I wanted to do and caught up with some of the pros and kept up with them.”

Harvey also gained a bit of notoriety by being the sole rider to jump a lengthy triple near the finish line aboard his YZ450F. Much to the delight of onlookers, Harvey even continued to make the leap late in the motos when he had a sizable lead.

In 25+ action, Eric Gillen motored to the Intermediate win ahead of Lyle Anderson. Gillen rode to comfortable leads in each moto while Anderson held down the second spot. Gillen also claimed a top-three performance in the 250cc Intermediates in addition to his 25+ class win.
